Journeying Through the Word
This week, Don & Cindy Martz joined us again to continue taking us on their journey through Israel and holy lands. They NEVER disappoint.
First, we saw the Jordan River (which is really no wider that Mahantago Creek). This body of water is the divider of Israel and Jordan. It is the same river Jesus was baptized in, so many people today are honored to be baptized in these waters.
Next, we learned about Masada (Herod's fortress)… As you might recall, Herod was extremely paranoid that everyone was after his crown. This not only led to his order to kill all of the baby boys in Bethelehem, but he also ordered the death of his own family that he thought might plot to take over.
Masada is also an important part of Jewish history, as there was a battle with rebel Jews and Roman soldiers in 73 AD. It really does have a tragic ending. You can read about this piece of history, here.
The next stop was En-gedi. This is where the caves are located - where David hid from King Saul. In one of these caves, Saul took a rest stop and was delivered into David’s hands. Instead of killing Saul (who was hunting David at this very moment), David cut off a piece of his cloak and used it as an example to prove to Saul that he was not wanting Saul (God’s anointed) harmed. He proved his loyalty to Saul in these caves.
Then, we saw the Qumran caves. This is where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in 1947.
We also saw a video of how different the buoyancy is of the Dead Sea. People floating are not able to keep their feet under water because of the high salt content. Many people use the water of the Dead Sea for their believed healing qualities.
We learned today that in Bible times, during the time of the early church, churches that did not have a synagogue met by the river (like the church of Philippi)…. A body of believers meeting by the river? Sound familiar?? It was like Cindy was talking about the foundation of River’s Edge!
Bible verses we read/referenced include:
Psalm 12:6-7
Luke 24:27
Luke 24:44-45
New Testament (regarding King Herod)
Old Testament (regarding King Saul and David)
