What the Book of John Tells Us About Resurrection Morning

Message by: Harrison Briner

All four Gospels show a different perspective on some of Jesus’ ministry. The Easter account is no different. They each have a different way of highlighting the events of THIS morning. Harrison focused on the book of John.

Isaiah 35:5-6
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.

Luke 7:20-23
20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

As predicted by Isaiah the prophet, Jesus was meant to:

  • Open the eyes of the blind

  • Open the ears of the deaf

  • Make the lame to leap

  • Give words to the mute tongue

  • Heal the sick but not just the physically ill the mentally ill also

  • Give hope in the darkest times

When messengers asked Jesus if He was the One to fulfill this prophecy, Jesus told them He was. This message delivered hope to an imprisoned John the baptist.

It is not just about what Jesus has done, but what He is doing. Today, we celebrate the empty tomb. The empty tomb was impossible. Jesus made it possible. Jesus makes anything possible.

John 14:12-14
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

We are called to be vessels of Jesus Christ and continue to do these great things. Things that the world says are not possible, but with Jesus, even today, healing and miracles are possible. Especially THIS day when the most impossible became truth.

John 20:1-18

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

When you look at verses 11 and 12, you can see what this scene looked like…

This is not actually the first time we see this image in the Bible…

The mercy seat was the top, or lid of the Arc of the Covenant.

It was where God communicated His law with Moses – where God’s glory appeared to the Israelites in Exodus.

Exodus 25:17-22
17 “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth. 18 And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end. Of one piece with the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. 20 The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be. 21 And you shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I shall give you. 22 There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.

The Mercy Seat would looks something like this….

This is also where the high priest would sprinkle the sacrificial blood, every year, on the day of atonement.

So, again, looking at the slab of stone in the tomb where Jesus once laid, you will see evidence of the shed blood of Jesus - the final atonement for everyone who accepts Him as their Lord and Savior.

While each Gospel tells this portion of the story differently, they all come to the same (and most important) conclusion:

HE IS RISEN!
