John the Baptist (Part I of II)
We kicked off the new year with a deep dive into the Word of God - led by Don Chubb II. Don gave us all a history lesson (because we like it when he geeks out with his history stuff) on John the Baptist. This week was the first of two installments from Don on this topic.
First, Don taught on the trustworthiness of the text in the Gospels (as compared to other historical texts) and how Jesus is undoubtedly the prophesied Messiah (God the flesh - come to earth… fully God).
Next, we learned about John the Baptists and how much his story intertwined with Jesus’ story. John is the one who the Old Testament foretold would prepare the way for Jesus - the Messiah.
Lastly, Don challenged us to live by John’s example and not miss opportunities to share the message of Jesus with others - our greatest mission (as Christians) on this earth. We can prepare the way for others to meet Christ when God calls them home.
Here are the scriptures we referenced and read:
Luke 1:57-80
Luke 3:1-6, 7-14, 15-17, 18-22
Matthew 3:13-18
John 2:19-30, 31-34, 35-40
2 Corinthians 5
Malachi 3:1, 4:5-6
